Kakashi Hatake is a Jōnin from Konohagakure. Because of his sharingan, he is also called “Sharingan no Kakashi” (写輪眼のカカシ, “Kakashi with the sharingan”) and “Kopīninja no Kakashi” (コピー忍者のカカシ, “Kakashi the Copy Ninja”).
Because of his talent and accomplishments, he is famous and infamous in the shinobi world. At the beginning of the plot, Kakashi becomes the sensei of Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno – Team 7.
After the end of the Fourth Ninja World War, in which Kakashi loses his sharingan, he is appointed Rokudaime Hokage.
As a child
Even as a child, Kakashi possessed white-silver hair that stuck out on the left side of his head, as well as black eyes. At that time, he usually wore a black full-body suit that reached up to his nose, covering the lower half of his face.
For what reason this is covered since his childhood is not known. Most of the time he can be seen with a bored, tired expression on his face, a peculiarity that he maintains throughout his life. Furthermore, when he entered the Academy, he wore a light gray sweater and a light green scarf adorned with a dark green pattern. Later, he exchanged the scarf for a green one without a pattern.
During his time as a Chūnin, he wore equally black clothing in combination with a sort of open white apron around his waist, while his ankles were wrapped in mesh armor.
During the Third Ninja World War, he can be seen wearing a two-tone, short-sleeved shirt with his sword strapped around it with a brown belt.
On both hands he wears blue arm guards and over them a guard. Across his left eye is a vertical scar after the World War, as Kakashi was injured there, losing his eye. Instead, the Sharingan of his childhood friend Obito Uchiha is now in Kakashi’s eye socket.
To protect it and avoid losing chakra, he has been wearing his headband over his eye ever since, which, coupled with his covered mouth, means that only the area around his right eye is visible.
As an adult
Kakashi is 181 cm tall as an adult and weighs 67.5 kg. His slender body is clad in the normal uniform of Konohagakure shinobi, which consists of a green vest, a long-sleeved blue shirt, and long blue pants, along with sandals of the same color, and fingerless gloves.
Although the lower half of his face cannot be seen, he seems to look extremely handsome, judging by the reaction of Teuchi and Ayame. In addition, Kakashi’s appearance resembles that of his father Sakumo, which is why Chiyo mistakes him for him.
After losing his sharingan to Madara in the Fourth Ninja World War, Naruto replaces it with an ordinary eyeball. Since then, he no longer wears his headband over his left eye. When his face was revealed, you can see that he has a birthmark under his mouth on the left.
After the death of Obito, Kakashi changes his character completely. From now on, teamwork is more important to him than anything else, and his main goal is always to bring his team home safely from the missions. He is also always late from now on, which is something like his trademark. He probably does this in memory of Obito, who was also never on time.
All these characteristics are what upset his team. Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura hate it when Kakashi is late, though he always apologizes curtly and makes up some excuse, knowing that he has only read the Icha Icha series. After initial difficulties, he likes his team very much: Sasuke reminds him of himself when he was young, he often acts very fatherly towards Sakura and he has great admiration for Naruto.
He also has a friendly rivalry with Might Guy, by whom he is often challenged to a duel. The current status is unknown, although before Naruto Shippūden Guy led with a victory.
Childhood and Academy Years
Kakashi Hatake was born as the son of Sakumo Hatake on September 15 in Konohagakure. All that is known about his mother is that she died young. Kakashi’s talent as a shinobi quickly became apparent, graduating from the academy at the top of his class after only one year at the age of five, and in turn becoming a Chūnin a year later.
Despite this rank, he joined a genin team led by Minato Namikaze, and his teammates became Obito Uchiha and Rin Nohara. At the age of eight, Kakashi suffered a stroke of fate that would shape the rest of his childhood. His father, who abandoned a mission in favor of the safety of his comrades and thus brought great losses to Hi no Kuni, committed suicide because he could not bear the hostility of the villagers.
This event turned Kakashi into a shinobi who acted strictly according to the rules and considered those who did not as trash. In addition, he became callous and a rational thinker who had no room in his life for dreams and desires. His thinking did not change until the Third Ninja World War, where the now thirteen-year-old Kakashi found himself in the same situation as his father once was.
Third Ninja World War
Due to a military shortage, Kakashi, on the day he becomes a Jōnin, is sent with his team on a mission whose goal is to infiltrate the enemy’s reinforcements and destroy the so-called Kannabikyō, thus making it difficult for the enemy to advance further. Thus, the then Team 7, consisting of Rin Nohara, Obito Uchiha, Kakashi Hatake and Minato Namikaze initially set out together. The plan is to split up later, leaving Kakashi to lead Rin and Obito.
After a relatively short time, they encounter their first enemy, which Kakashi is the first to notice. He persuades Minato to attack himself and presents his Chidori for the first time. Unfortunately, the jutsu prevents him from perceiving the movements of his opponents precisely enough and Minato can only save him at the last second.
At this point, Minato tells Kakashi to stop using his Chidori, as it is an incomplete jutsu. Kakashi, who has been wounded in the arm, is treated by Rin before the mission continues. At this point, the team splits up and the three young shinobi make their way to the bridge without Minato.
It doesn’t take long for Kakashi to notice enemies again. This time there are two of them, one of which distracts Kakashi and Obito while the second grabs Rin. Neither Kakashi nor Obito manage to stop them from escaping and Rin is gone.
Obito doesn’t hesitate and wants to go after them, but Kakashi stops him and says that it’s more important to finish their mission and take care of Rin only after that. He thinks that the enemy would first try to get information out of her and would not kill her right away because she could be useful to him as an Iryōnin.
Obito, however, does not see fit to put Rin in the back for a mission. He holds a mirror up to Kakashi by talking about the latter’s father, saying that he was a hero in his opinion because he aborted his mission to save his comrades. “In the world of shinobi, those who break the rules are called scum. But those who abandon their comrades are even worse than that.” With those words, Obito leaves Kakashi behind and sets out to rescue Rin on his own.
When he finally finds the enemy, he observes his hiding place from a safe distance and considers how best to proceed. He is not exactly inconspicuous and hits his goggles so hard that they make a noise that draws his enemies’ attention to him.
The ninja who kidnapped Rin sneaks up on Obito, surprises him from behind and strikes. At the last second Kakashi, who has thought over Obito’s words and has decided to do everything for the good of his comrades in the future, comes and saves him.
However, he doesn’t manage to kill his opponent with one blow and the latter safely turns invisible again. Kakashi and Obito can now no longer perceive him, both his chakra and his smell seem to have completely disappeared.
Again he sneaks behind Obito and Kakashi can protect him again in the last second. However, this time he is severely injured and loses his left eye. This situation causes Obito’s fighting spirit to be fully awakened. He decides to be strong and leave nothing to chance. In a split second he awakens his Sharingan and strikes down the enemy. Together with Kakashi, he treats his wound and the two of them make their way together to the cave where Rin is still being held captive.
As a team, they finally manage to knock down the last enemy long enough to free Rin. But no sooner have they removed her bonds than he rises again and brings the cave down. All three run for their lives. Due to the fact that Kakashi is blind in his left eye, he misses a rock, which hits him and throws him to the ground.
Obito grabs him and throws him aside to save him, but is himself caught by a huge boulder and half buried. As he lies dying, he makes his last wish to give Kakashi his sharingan so that he can continue to see the world through its eye and makes him promise to protect Rin. With a heavy heart, Kakashi and Rin leave the Obito behind and face the battle against the enemy reinforcements that have arrived in the meantime.
Kakashi, with Obito’s sharingan, can now use his chidori effectively. He urges Rin to flee as he takes on the enemy, but his skills are not enough. At the last second, the two are saved by Minato, who teleported to them using the kunai he had given Kakashi to become a Jōnin. Together with Minato, Rin and Kakashi are able to destroy the bridge and ultimately mourn Obito.
In the anime it is shown that Might Guy took Obito’s place after his supposed death. Together with him and Rin, Kakashi was on a mission, during which Kakashi and Guy began to trust each other and work as a team. In addition, Kakashi cut a lightning bolt with his chidori, which earned the jutsu the name Raikiri. On another mission, Kakashi met Hanare and showed her how to find her way back to her teacher using the clouds.
Kakashi’s youth and anbu period
Plagued by the memories of Rin’s death, Kakashi became increasingly cold and withdrawn from his comrades. Minato Namikaze, who had been appointed Yondaime Hokage at the time, noticed this and assigned his protégé to the Anbu under his command.
There, he came to great fame in his first year and the nickname “Reiketsu no Kakashi” (冷血のカカシ, “Cold-Blooded Kakashi”), as he completed his missions in a cold-hearted and goal-oriented manner. To relieve him of his anbu duties, Minato eventually assigned him to watch over Kushina while she was in her ten-month pregnancy.
During one of his visits to Rin’s grave, he told her that Kushina’s delivery was imminent. Unnoticed by Kakashi, a masked man overheard this conversation. On the evening of the birth, Kakashi felt a strange presence in the air. Shortly thereafter, Kurama appeared in Konohagakure and the younger ninja, including Kakashi, were ordered by Kurenai’s father not to help defend the village.
When Kakashi is assigned to his new team, everything seems fine, but then they are all supposed to fight Kakashi and they all fail. Only when they want to give Naruto, who is tied to a tree trunk, something to eat, does Kakashi let them pass because they acted as a team. The team’s first major mission is to escort Tazuna a bridge builder of the Wave Empire.
During the mission, they are attacked by the Demon Brothers, who Kakashi confuses and then quickly defeats. After the fight, he scares Naruto, who has a kunai jammed into his hand, that he might bleed to death. Amazed, he finds that the wound has already healed as he wraps a bandage around Naruto. Shortly after, they are attacked by Zabuza Momochi, one of the seven shinobi swordsmen from Kirigakure. In a tough fight with Zabuza,
Kakashi shows that he wants to protect his team at all costs and succeeds through his techniques. After the fight, he trains with his team in the forest and meets Zabuza again on the bridge. During the course of the fight, Kakashi uses the only jutsu he didn’t copy, the Raikiri. Despite this incredible jutsu, he does not defeat Zabuza, since Haku the companion of Zabuza, intercepts the attack. Afterwards, Zabuza dies as well. The mission is successfully completed and Team 7 returns to Konohagakure.
Kakashi’s role in the Chuunin selection exam
The next big event is the Chūnin selection exam. All new teams are proposed and also take part in the exam. When it comes to the final decision just before the exam, he talks to his team again. Again he makes their teamwork clear and the exam begins. In the preliminary round for the third round of the exam he is present and seals Sasuke’s Juin after the fight with Yoroi.
After that, he watches the rest of the fights and acts as a mobile explanation unit of jutsu for Naruto and Sakura. When the preliminary round is over, Naruto wants Kakashi to train him, however Kakashi has already organized a trainer for Naruto and he trains Sasuke instead. He still teaches him Lee’s fighting style in detail and also teaches him the Chidori so that he can stand against Gaara’s sand. While Konohagakure is then attacked by Sunagakure and Otogakure, he fights against the Otoninja, protecting the spectators of the test.
The attack on Konohagakure is over and the search for a new Hokage begins. Kakashi now shows that he knows Jiraiya and discusses many things with him. During the search for Tsunade, Kakashi lies unconscious in his bed as Itachi’s Mangekyō Sharingan has affected him. Only Tsunade is able to heal him.
Kakashi’s Battle against Naruto and Sakura
After the new Hokage is appointed, Naruto and Sasuke fight on the roof of the hospital. Before Naruto’s Rasengan meets Sasuke’s Chidori, he flings the two genin apart and points out again and again their lack of teamwork. Afterwards he talks to Sasuke again. Kakashi doesn’t notice Sasuke’s escape, but when Tsunade tells him about it, he knows that Naruto and Sasuke will fight. He goes with his ninken to look for Naruto and Sasuke and finds the unconscious Naruto in the Valley of the End. He then takes him to Konohagakure to the hospital.
After 2 1/2 years, Naruto and Sakura are to fight Kakashi again. Kakashi also uses his sharingan in this fight, which gives him many advantages. After almost three years of training, Naruto and Sakura manage to outsmart Kakashi and take the bells from him. Now they are Team Kakashi. Then they get their first mission as Team Kakashi: Gaara has been kidnapped and Sunagakure asks for help. Immediately, the team sets out and Sakura heals the poisoned Kankurō in Sunagakure.
A new person enters the scene: Chiyo. She attacks Kakashi, but is stopped. She thinks Kakashi is the white fang of Konoha, but this was his father. On the now following search for Gaara, Kakashi fights together with Naruto against Yūra, who received the abilities from Itachi. They win the fight and continue searching for Gaara.
When they find Akatsuki’s hiding place, Deidara escapes with Gaara’s body. Kakashi and Naruto pursue Deidara and now Kakashi’s new jutsu comes into play. It is Kamui, his technique of Mangekyō Sharingan. This is how he is able to stop Deidara. In the end, Chiyo revives Gaara with the help of Naruto’s chakra, since hers was not enough, and the mission ends successfully, but Kakashi has to go back to the hospital.
Since Kakashi is in the hospital, Yamato takes over the team, so Kakashi misses the search for Sasuke. When Shikamaru, Ino and Chōji want to attack Hidan and Kakuzu after the death of Asuma, he joins them and helps them in their mission. Kakashi fights with Hidan first. Then Shikamaru separates Hidan from Kakuzu and so Kakashi fights Kakuzu. He can hold out against Kakuzu for a long time, but then Kakuzu combines two of his monsters and Kakashi is almost defeated. Naruto and Yamato interfere in the fight and save Kakashi and the rest of the team. Last but not least, Kakashi kills Kakuzu’s last heart. After that, they head back to Konoha and, how could it be otherwise, Kakashi is hospitalized. Shortly after, Kakashi and Yamato get the order from Tsunade to never let Naruto use his Fūton: Lawn Shuriken again.
For a long time there is peace for Kakashi, until the second search for Sasuke begins. Their search is a quick action, since Sasuke has murdered Orochimaru and now wants to kill his brother, which the team from Konoha should avoid. During the search, they are stopped by Tobi, who completely outmatches the team and reveals his sharingan to Kakashi at the end of the fight. This search also fails and so the team returns to Konoha.
When Pain invades Konoha, Kakashi fights the Yahiko body together with Chōji and his father Chōza. However, they are without a chance. When Kakashi discovers the secret of Pain’s Shinra Tensei, he sends Chōji with a message to Tsunade. To help him escape safely, Kakashi once again uses his Mangekyō Sharingan, which causes him to use up all his chakra and die. He still remembers Obito, Rin, and his sensei at the time, Minato, and then walks through the darkness until he comes across a man sitting by a campfire. It is Kakashi’s father, Sakumo. Kakashi says he wants to tell him everything now.
When Chōji gives Tsunade the news, she says that Chōza, who was also badly wounded in the fight against Pain, can still be saved if he is taken to the hospital immediately. When Chōji then asks what happened to Kakashi, Tsunade does not answer. Later, when Naruto arrives, he points out to Tsunade that he can sense all the villagers with the help of senjutsu and asks her if Kakashi is on a mission. Tsunade answers this question with her head down. After Nagato is brought to his senses by Naruto, Kakashi is revived by Nagato, as are all the residents of Konohagakure. Kakashi is still in conversation with Sakumo at this point, and is suddenly seized by a bright light and wakes up next to Chōji and Chōza.
When Tsunade will not come out of the coma for a while, Kakashi is proposed as Hokage by Shikaku Nara, but Danzō thinks that Kakashi’s sensei, the Fourth, is a disciple of Jiraiya, while others of his disciples (Konan and Pain) almost destroyed Konoha. After Naruto tells that a ninja controlled Kyūbi from the background whose appearance resembles Tobi’s, Kakashi concludes that Tobi must be Madara Uchiha, since Madara is the only nukenin of the Uchiha clan who can control the Kyūbi and, like Tobi, possesses the Sharingan.
Soon the meeting of the Kage will take place in Tetsu no Kuni and Kakashi also goes to the land with Yamato and Naruto and on the way meets the Raikage, with whom Naruto wants to talk. During the conversation, Kakashi tries to help Naruto, but the Raikage remains firm and continues his journey. During the meeting, Kakashi, Yamato and Naruto are in a house in the town of the meeting and are suddenly attacked by Tobi. Kakashi and Yamato are able to surround Tobi and he starts talking about Sasuke and his fate.
After Tobi disappears, Sakura, Kiba and Lee show up at the village and another conversation begins. Sakura leaves after her fake confession of love to Naruto and shortly after a Saiklon shows up. Sai reveals Sakura’s true intentions and Kakashi and Yamato plan to split up afterwards.
Gaara seeks out Kakashi and tells them the news of the Kage meeting. They then act as if Kakashi is Hokage and Yamato is to return to Konoha with Naruto and the news, while betraying Sakura, knowing how hopeless she is against Sasuke.
When Kakashi arrives at Sasuke’s house, he is just able to stop him from killing Sakura. He realizes his mistakes at the time, tries once again to convert Sasuke with words and says he doesn’t want to have to kill him. Sasuke doesn’t take him seriously and thinks he wanted to kill him for a very long time. Kakashi finally understands how the Sandaime Hokage must have felt and Sasuke thinks then Kakashi will probably share his fate.
Already after Sasuke’s first attack it shows how superior he is to Kakashi even in his weakened state. Kakashi is saved only by his Mangekyō Sharingan. He realizes how dangerous Sasuke has become, but the use of the Mangekyō Sharingan has already weakened him so much that he has to watch helplessly as Sasuke almost kills Sakura, who is then saved by Naruto.
Sasuke then tells them that he has already killed Danzō as part of his revenge. Kakashi, after a conversation and the appearance of Tobi, finally wants to leave Sasuke to Naruto and kill Tobi with Kamui, but the latter only thinks that Kakashi should not bother as it will have no effect. Thereupon Kakashi lets it be and Tobi takes Sasuke with him.
Back in the village Kakashi is supposed to replace Danzō, but again does not become Hokage when Tsunade wakes up again.
Fourth Ninja World War
Kakashi is appointed leader of the Third Division by the five Kage. This includes fighters who specialize in mid-range combat. When he goes out with his division, he meets Zabuza, Haku, Gari and Pakura, who have been revived by Kabuto, as well as the seven shinobi swordsmen from Kirigakure. Kakashi and his team manage to render Zabuza and Haku harmless. A short time later, he and Guy come to Naruto and Killer B’s aid in the fight against Tobi and the dead Jinchūriki. During the subsequent fight against Tobi and Gedō Mazō, the latter reveals his identity: Obito Uchiha.
Kakashi is stunned when it turns out that the man in the mask is his childhood friend Obito Uchiha. Kakashi tries to find out how Obito survived, but he evades his questions and accuses Kakashi of not protecting Rin and letting this useless reality end. When Madara Uchiha enters the stage and talks to Obito everyone is shocked as Madara seems to have instructed Obito to create the Jūbi from the individual bijus and apply Mugen Tsukuyomi. While Madara fights the Jinchūriki, Kakashi tries to find out with Guy why Obito is making common cause with someone like Madara. After another clash between Naruto and Madara, Kakashi repeatedly asks Obito why he is doing all this. Obito replies that everything has been said and they will now have their final battle. Obito summons huge shuriken from his dimension which Kakashi deflects with Doton: Doryu Heki. Obito manages to wound Kakashi on his left leg despite Kakashi’s efforts. During the fight with Obito, Kakashi confesses that he is trash because he could not protect Rin and is almost killed by Obito, only Naruto’s courageous intervention with one of his shadow doubles could prevent this. As Naruto announces to everyone that he will not let any of his comrades die, Kakashi remembers when he spoke those words to Team 7. Afterwards, Kakashi tells Obito that Obito’s will has passed to Naruto and that he will do everything in his power to protect Naruto.
While Obito attacks the weakened Kakashi, Kurama and Naruto swap places and Kurama orders Kakashi to give him his hand. Shortly after, Kakashi is sucked into Obito’s dimension and disappears. However, it turns out that Kurama has the ability to transfer his chakra to other people and has thus recharged Kakashi’s chakra reserves. Together with Naruto, he manages to score a hit against Obito by waiting until he summons himself into the dimension and inflicts a wound on his stomach. In the end, however, they were unable to prevent Jubi’s resurrection. Immediately after Jubi’s resurrection, Obito and Madara use mokuton tendrils to connect with Jubi and suppress his spirit. Meanwhile, Kurama takes Kakashi and Guy into his mouth to heal them from wounds and restore their chakra. While Kurama works out a strategy, Kakashi notes that he likes Kurama to take the lead. After a direct attack fails because Jubi seems too fast, Kurama orders Kakashi to use Kamui to give Hachibi a surprise attack. The attack fails, and Kakashi collapses weakened by the use of his sharingan.
As Jubi lashes out for the final blow, the Shinobi Alliance arrives and repels Jubi’s attack. Sakura immediately begins healing Kakashi’s wounds. Shikaku Nara asked him about his experience fighting Jubi during the course of the confrontation. As it turns out, Shikaku can learn from Kakashi’s information that his Kamui technique has more than tripled.
Kakashi’s Skills and Jutsu
Kakashi is, just like his father, an extremely talented ninja. At the age of five he becomes a genin and at six he passes the Chūnin selection exam. At the age of 9, due to the war and lack of military strength, he is appointed Jōnin and gets his own command. When Obito then falls in action, Kakashi gets his left eye transplanted, including Sharingan, which from then on significantly shapes his fighting style. He now copies the techniques of his opponents and then adds them to his own repertoire. He is also thus able to perfect the jutsu Chidori that he developed. He is also one of the few ninja capable of using four of the five elemental chakra types in battle.
Kakashi also generally adopts the techniques of others: for example, he raises a group of eight ninches, which is usually the preserve of the Inuzuka clan, or he can also influence the Hachimon, which is usually Might Guy’s special technique. Kakashi also has a massive arsenal of techniques at his disposal and is excellent at Tai, Nin and Genjutsu and can form finger signs with insane speed. His only weakness is that, since he is not an Uchiha, he cannot restore his left eye to normal. Therefore, when he does not want to use the Sharingan to save chakra, he wears his forehead protector over this eye to cover it.
He is also able to use the Mangekyō Sharingan, which he activates when Rin dies. This even increases his abilities and he develops a special ninjutsu, the Kamui. How
ever, this technique costs him a lot of endurance and chakra, which is why he cannot use it for long or often. However, it is not known if he also becomes blind by using the Mangekyō Sharingan, and if so, to what extent. Apparently, Kakashi can switch back and forth between the Sharingan and the Mangekyō Sharingan like an Uchiha, although as mentioned above, he cannot completely deactivate his Sharingan.
After Obito’s death, he transfers his Sharingan (both sides)to Kakashi. Now he is even able to create a perfect Susano’o, which looks similar to Kakashi. However, after defeating Kaguya, Obito seems to have taken his skills back to the Jōdo.
According to a statement by Zabuza, Kakashi is proficient in at least 1000 jutsu, though not all are known.
Missions completed by Kakashi
Kakashi’s different style
- 畑, pronounced “Hatake” (はたけ), means “field” or “farm”. 案山子, pronounced “Kakashi” (カカシ), means “scarecrow.”

- In the seventh anime opening, Kakashi, instead of his wolf, attacks with a kind of mini Kirin Pain.
- In the special ロック・リーの青春フルパワー忍伝 (“Rock Lee no Seishun Full Power Ninden”), Kakashi explains that he only wears his mask to hide the nosebleeds he gets while reading his books.
- Due to his fighting style, Kakashi often keeps one of his eyes closed. This should actually ensure that he can’t WP.png stereoscopic vision.
- Already on the cover of chapter 294 you can see Kakashi without a mask (show image).
